It could be any year, any beach, any generation of children and surely someone is getting buried in the sand. And it never gets old. It's always amusing to watch.We all somehow feel the grittiness as our own. This year, it seems, these simple summer traditions take on an added importance. Cultivating and preserving the memories for our children of happy, safe, playful moments - moments that provide the foundation for confident teenage and adult years -- has never seemed so dubious and critical at the same time.

This photo is childhood done right. It's sibling playing/fighting -- that beautiful balance that is always present in varying percentages when we're with our brothers and sisters; it's the Jersey shore; it's unencumbered sandy mess.
